Designing A Web Site For A Specific Screen Resolution is Over

April 30th, 2009 — 04:23 pm

Introduction

Over a period of about 15 years we gained an enormous amount of experience in website development and I learned that it was important to stop and think about what size screen resolution should we be building websites at?

I was reading somewhere recently that apparently these days the only answer to that question should be ‘all of them’ and ‘none of them’. What this basically means is that new websites should be built to accommodate all different screen sizes these days, particularly with the increased popularity of hand help web browsers, smart phones, net books and the like. Of course there is also the other end of the spectrum in the new huge wide screen flat screen monitors. I recently treated myself to a 24 inch Asus which does 1920×1080 which is big enough to get two web browser windows on screen side by side, but if you make one of them full size, the majority or websites look, well, just plain strange!

What exactly is screen resolution then?

If you are not familiar with screen resolution, the simple answer is that it is the size of your screen. However, this can be quite misleading because it is actually the number of pixels that make up the display area on the screen of your monitor. Still not clear? Well let’s look at some examples to help clarify exactly what screen resolution is.

Currently what would appear to be the most common screen resolution is 1024×768 (accounting for 62% of my website visitors). This is a screen that is 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. What is a pixel? A Pixel, derived from the phrase Picture Element, is basically one of the thousands of tiny dots that make up your display screen. However, this does not necessarily determine the physical size of your monitor (14 inch, 15 inch, 19 inch etc) because most monitors are capable of displaying the screen in different screen resolutions. It is fairly true to say that if you want to run your monitor at a high screen resolution then you will need a large monitor, the larger the monitor the greater the resolution it can display at (assuming your graphics processor can support a high resolution).

All getting a bit technical? Put simply the larger the screen resolution the more things you can fit on your screen before they have to go onto the next line, or before you have to scroll down or scroll right.

What’s this got to do with Web Site Design?

When creating the graphics for a new website design, traditionally the experienced graphic designer would be working to a specific resolution in order to make sure that the design fits in your browser window without having to scroll right. (Thankfully most website owners don’t demand you make their pages so that you don’t have to scroll down anymore!)

The majority of websites are designed to a fixed size of 1024×768 or 1280×1024, but if these web pages are viewed on a smaller screen, such as 800×600, then the page won’t be fully visible. An experienced web design company can provide a site build along a fluid design to avoid this problem.

When designing at a fixed resolution you can deal with larger display settings by either aligning the site to the left and having a huge great big gap to the right, or you can centre align the website in the available space and then the extra screen resolution will be on either side of the content area.

However, the sensible, modern day approach is to make the site flexible to allow for all screen resolutions by creating ‘fluid’ content that will flow to fit the available page space irrespective of what size screen resolution it is viewed at.

Also, because of the increased competitiveness of the web the challenge for a website owner is how to engage your viewers and get them to stay on your website for as long as possible and show them as much content as possible. One way to help with this is to make full use of all of the available space. Two great big blank areas either side of a tiny web page is simply just a waste of space. Imagine if you picked up a newspaper or magazine and only half of the front page had got any content on it, the editor would get the sack for sure! So by creating fluid web pages, web site owners can take advantage of larger publishing spaces available on bigger screen users, whilst optimising content for display on smaller screens as well.

Another advantage with big screen displays is the ability to use the new area for re-publishing. Re-publishing is a way to put content from another area of your site onto a different page, thereby bringing it forward for the viewer. An example of this that we did on one site we created was to insert an alphabetical list of names of the products available on the website below the left hand menu on pages that were very long.

All pages tend to be different lengths, as determined by the content on the page, so we used a clever widget to create this list of product names and load it in the gap until it ran out of space. This was great for SEO too as it gave a direct link to specific product pages based on their product names without having to crawl through category pages first, also website users would often see something in the list they wanted and click straight through to the page and buy the item.

Ultimately this has evolved into what would now be thought of as a web 2.0 ‘tag cloud’ a list of tags that are usually user generated, to indicate and link directly to a specific content group or item. Using a tag cloud is a great way to fill fluid spaces on larger screens that you can fill with what are effectively links to other parts of the website.

How do you create fluid content?

Fluid content is quite simple to create, the majority will be words of course, which are naturally fluid so on a small resolution screen you might get 5-10 words to a row, on a larger screen you can get 20-30 words or more. However the challenge comes with images, and particularly website graphics. A photograph, whilst it can be made smaller and larger offline, it can’t be automatically resized by the web browser at the time of viewing (not taking into account the Zoom function in Internet Explorer).

The HTML code that makes up your web pages is again designed to allow fluidity by fitting content into the available page area, so some tips that can be employed to make content fluid include not using tables in the code (which are depreciated these days now anyway), not setting specific screen width in pixels, use 100% instead. By fading images into blocks of colour in the website graphics, you can create a stretchable element that will scale to fit all window sizes. Use little boxes to put stuff in, these can then flow around the screen as required without having to be in any particular place, they also help to draw the eye to special offers, discounts, newsletter sign ups etc, and can of course be styled by your graphic designer with colours and shading and gradients to look great.

Conclusion

Our local Loughborough web designer came up with a terrific design for our new website which is fluid so it scales depending on the screen resolution being used to view it. This means that even if you are viewing our website on a smart phone or mobile phone browser it displays properly, and then when viewed on a great big monitor it brings more of the homepage content ‘above the fold’ maximising that all important first impression and sales opportunity.

Do you strive for Sixpack Abs?

April 30th, 2009 — 04:08 pm

Anyone with a sense for good looks who wants to improve his or her looks will try to get better defined abs.

some people are trying a lot of stuff to get a six pack abdominals (short: sixpack training) and quite often nothing is happening. But how can one know what really has the desired effect? How can you distinguish good six pack exercises and bad six pack exercises? There are 3 main abdominal training methods many people rely on that are not so effective at all:

Number one: An exercise you can forget is the standard sit up. It hurts your lower back what really disqualifies it… and it only works a few of your abdominal muscles so to avoid it is a real no brainer.

Second: Crunches. Some consider the crunch to be a minimized version of the sit up and it surely puts less strain on your lower back. Nevertheless I don’t count it to to the best six pack training exercises. Why? Only your upper abs (mainly) are mainly properly trained, it does more or less nothing for the lower abs and what is lacking, too, is a proper range of motion to really work your abs with effect. Third, it is still not totally harmless for your back and neck.

Last: Don’t think about buying any of the funny gimmicks that you see on TV. Those guys are marketing geniuses who will say their product will put you in proper training positions if you just hand them enough bucks, but they are all junk. All you really need is a set of proven six pack exercises and the proper training + nutrition advice.

“The Truth About Six Pack Abs” is an abdominal fitness ebook by Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist and Personal Trainer. The ebook has sixpack abs at its focus and includes effective full body routines, and a nutrition plan to get rid of fat around both your waist and your body overall. That being said, it’s not for you if you are looking for fitness short cuts. This program works, but it takes effort.

But up to now this product was only available in english language. Recently the ebook has been translated to german (”Die Wahrheit über Bauchmuskeln“)

If you speak german and want to learn more about muscles in general have a look at www.muskulatur.net There are sections for each of the big muscle groups (e.g. Rückenmuskulatur). General topics are covered like how muscle grows and what function which type of muscle has.

How To Find The Right Web Hosting Company For You

April 30th, 2009 — 03:54 pm

You’ve decided you want to start a blog and you are thinking about using a free blog site, this may not be the best idea.  Or else you will have to backtrack when you get up and running and lose traction.  What I mean is that you can start a free blog on Blogger or Wordpress and have it get tons of subscribers and visitors and then you want to make it look more professional and decide to get your own domain and then you have to get webhosting. You can lose a lot of traffic and subscribers due to the change and it can be hard to get it all back.

What I would recommend is that you sign up for a discount web hosting company.  You can get hosting for under 5 bucks a month.  This will not break the bank.  You can get a reliable web host that will provide you all the features you need and you will look like a professional.

You don’t have to go looking for the cheapest web hosting deal you can find.  The saying holds true that you get what you pay for.  A free webhost will have tons of ads on your site which will really distract your visitors from what you are trying to say. This will not give your visitors a good impression of you.

You can find inexpensive web hosting and still get reliability from companies like Hostgator and InMotion Hosting. You can buy hosting for $4.95 a month, talk about inexpensive.  And then include all the popular features that make starting and running a blog easy as pie.  You enter in the name of the blog and your email address, click a few buttons and voila, you have a new blog. You then can upload some free plugins to optimize your new blog and a nice theme and then it’s blogging time.  You can do all this in less than 20 minutes.

Make sure any company you go with has 24/7 tech support.  Only the bigger and more reliable companies will offer this. You can rest easy knowing that if anything ever does happen, you will get help when you need it most.  Now go out there and start a new blog.

The health of your PC is vitaly important and when windows’ performance starts to slow it nearly always occurs at the registry. Intensive Vegetable Growing

April 29th, 2009 — 06:00 pm

The purpose of square foot gardening is to harvest the most produce possible from the space available, by growing small quantities over a longer time. This is also achieved by reducing the space between plants. To ensure you understand your garden and learn about plants you should keep a square foot garden diary to have a log of your failures and successes to improve your results.

The practice of square foot gardening isn’t just for those with small back yards; rather square foot gardens allows you to concentrate your work effort to create an ideal plant environment, to give better yields naturally.

The are many people who like the idea of digging for victory. They enjoy the sight of long, straight rows in their gardens and the hard labour that goes with digging and hoeing the land, whilst others prefer machine cultivation.

Owning a square foot garden still means weeding by hand but because the raised bed is filled with compost, peat and vermiculite there are fewer weeds and they can easily be seen and removed in a few minutes.

If you like the idea of all your vegetables being ready to harvest in one go then square foot gardens are not for you. The idea of square foot gardens is to have something growing all the time so you can have fresh vegetables growing in your garden for most of the year.

To benefit you need to have a good square foot garden plan which requires to be thought out early in the year, thorough planning to make the best use of your time and space. Before you start planting, you must consider the interrelationships of plants with each other and their needs and how to protect them from bugs and insects.

Square foot gardens are based on 1.2m by 1.2m raised beds. If you have more space then the length of the bed can be increased to 12ft. The width should not be more that 1.2m so that you can easily reach the middle with out standing on the soil.

The Definition of Nostalgia is Unique to the Reminiscent

April 29th, 2009 — 04:42 pm

Nostalgia is common to all ideologies (even among libertarians and their unkempt cousins, the anarchists). But conservative nostalgia is almost always geared at recreating communities of the past.  Nostalgia isn’t uncommon, of course, but in any experience it tends to come in waves. Waves of nostalgia and memory sweep across the various gaming message boards and can be physically held through collectible toys.

For months the boards will be crowded with trade offers, OT (off-topic) randomness, and PK smack talking, but then someone will post a memory of the “early days,” which in turn creates a wave of “Do you remember .”-type threads.

Nostalgia is better considered as a perceptual and representational strategy with variant cultural politics, one that can only be understood in relation to thier other goals. The time when nostalgia had the “dubious distinction” of being one of theory’s most “pigeonholed concepts” is over. Nostalgia is not best studied as a moral choice but as a political and personal inevitability. We all do it, we all feel it.

Nostalgia is a poor foundation for any classic movie memories , and film’s visceral pleasures are too limited to effectively compensate for the lack of credible characters or a coherent storyline. Nostalgia is instead something which cannot be constrained to brief formulas or summarized simply; it is a mass of intense and impalpable sensations, both mental and corporeal, which inevitably mark and infiltrate every life to some extent.

Nostalgia is again faulted for its lack of accuracy: the present tries to “focus the landscape of the past through nostalgia-tinted spectacles”. The image this sentimentality constructs is said to have little to do with actual historical period objects, and even the visual elegance of “nostalgia films” is seen as a sign of their mystifying intentions.

Nostalgia is also a privileging of the past over the present—a longing to go back because it was in some way better than the present.

What do you eat after weight loss surgery?

April 27th, 2009 — 01:31 pm

Weight loss surgery had its beginnings 40 years ago. Doctors noticed that people who had parts of their stomach or intestines removed to treat ulcers or cancer tended to lose a lot of weight after surgery - regardless of what they ate. Weight Loss Surgery is not for everyone. Candidates must be at least 100 pounds over your ideal weight and ready for a permanent weight loss solution. Weight loss surgery may offer hope of significant and lasting weight loss.

Weight loss surgery has a tremendous, positive impact on the health issues associated with excess weight. We have many years of experience performing laparoscopic surgery and have chosen to dedicate our practice to LAGB surgery - the best permanent solution for obesity. Weight loss surgery techniques, such as gastric banding, have been shown to be effective in reducing body weight and obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes. Although the results of these procedures are widely beneficial, there are some complications. Weight loss surgery involves some continued disadvantages as the patient heals as well.

Weight loss surgery does not cure back pain, but in many cases patients find relief. Weight loss surgery isn’t for everyone. Some people are actually too heavy for it because they have so many other health problems. Weight loss surgery limits the amount of food you can take in. Some operations also restrict the amount of food you can digest.

Gastric bypass surgery and gastric lap band surgery are two weight loss operations that are more popular than ever. They work by shrinking the space available to store and digest food, so patients feel fuller faster, as well as by poorly absorbing the food, so that fewer calories are taken in. Gastric bypass involves separating the stomach into a small pouch. This partitioning delays the mixing of food and digestive juices from the lower stomach.

Medicaid is the federal government’s health care plan for certain low-income individuals and families. Whether Medicaid covers weight loss surgery varies on a state-by-state basis. Medical science does not know enough about how our bodies work yet. Weight-loss surgery is an experiment, and people are the guinea pigs. Medicare patients can only be operated on by COE surgeons. You mught need some Reconstructive Surgery about 2 years after your Gastric Bypass Surgery.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, and morbid obesity is characterized by a BMI of 40 or more. The research team controlled for age and diabetes status. Obesity is the most common chronic disease in the U.S. Louis Flancbaum, one of the world’s foremost experts on weight-loss surgery, takes you through the entire process, from presurgical evaluation to postop care.

This is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. You should consult your doctor if you have questions regarding any medical condition, before starting any new treatment, and before stopping any treatment that has been prescribed for you.

Where to stay in Mudgee, NSW, Australia

April 27th, 2009 — 04:01 am

So, my latest news is that I’ve got a friend who has just returned from a recent stay in a town called Mudgee in Australia and he recommends a Guesthouse there. I wish I could get there someday ‘cos it sounds wonderful.

Mudgee is a compact town in the middle of New South Wales and as it happens there are a large number of places to stay in that area. He recommends this Mudgee Guesthouse if you want a friendly, not to say, amazingly hospitable welcome as well as good quality comfortable accommodation at a sensible price. Accommodation in Mudgee is usually of a respectable standard as it happens.

Why do people go to Mudgee in the first place was something I wanted to know (I mean have you heard of big town really and was first settled in the 1820s by some people from the UK. What my friend was looking for was a place to stay that was near the town yet peaceful. There are many Mudgee Getaways in fact (Getaways is a local term for places to stay) and they are very popular.

Other local towns include Kandos, Gulgong, Rylstone, Hargraves, Hill End. Lue, Windeyer and Wollar and they offer different sorts of accommodation.

One thing to bear in mind that applies to things Australian is that the word “local” seems to have a different meaning down under. So your neighbour may in fact be several miles away and I have a hunch that getting from Mudgee to Kandos could take a while. According to Google Maps the journey is around 70km.

So if you need Mudgee accommodation you want to make sure you have found somewhere good to stay or you could find yourself travelling another hour or two!
