How To Print Laser Labels

June 29th, 2009 — 09:01 pm

Printing quality self-adhesive labels on a laser printer is easy. All you need to do is to put them in the paper tray so they will print portrait, set your printer software on the “labels” setting and then print as normal. For improved positioning of the print you can use the media bypass slot usually positioned above the paper tray, this reduces the number of rollers the label sheet passes through and helps to prevent the print from slewing left at the top and right at the bottom of the A4 sheet.

The labels setting on your printer driver software is usually in the “settings” or “properties” section, and these options are on that rather annoying page that pops up every time you print something. Some of the more expensive or modern laser printers have auto sensing, which means they automatically sense the thickness of the media they are loaded with.

You do have to print A4 labels in a portrait direction; this is because, like wood, paper has a grain direction. The grain direction is from the top to the bottom of the sheet rather than side to side. The result of this is that the paper is more rigid along its length; this means that the labels are better supported on the backing paper and less likely to peel off the backing paper while printing.

Laser printers are not designed to print labels, they are designed to print thinner A4 sheets, so it is always a good idea to look in the printer manufacturer’s manual to see what they advise for label printing. To enable the printers to print labels well you need to use laser labels made from laser grade paper and cut in a layout that also reduces the chances of separation from the backing during printing. Laser grade paper has a specified smoothness so that the laser toner can achieve the resolution you need.

Laser labels also have a certain water content this is essential and helps the toner to key into the paper when it goes through the fuser in your printer. (The fuser is like a heated mangle with the paper passing between two rollers one of which is heated.) If the labels dry out then the laser print will smudge so always keep unused labels in their packaging. Laser labels also have a [particular|certain} type of backing paper which gives enough friction so that the rollers in the printer can move it accurately.

Oakland A’s

June 29th, 2009 — 04:27 pm

The Oakland Athletics are a professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. The Athletics are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From 1968 to the present, the Athletics have played in the Oakland Coliseum.

The “Athletics” name originates from the late 19th century “athletic clubs”, specifically the Athletic of Philadelphia. They are most prominently nicknamed “the A’s”, in reference to the blackletter “A”, a trademark of the team and the old Athletic of Philadelphia. This has gained very prominent use, and in some circles is used more frequently than the full “Athletics” name. They are also known as “the White Elephants” or simply “the Elephants”, in reference to then New York Giants‘ manager John McGraw’s calling the team a “white elephant”. This was embraced by the team, who then made a white elephant the team’s mascot, and often incorporated it into the logo or sleeve patches.

One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1901. Then the Philadelphia Athletics, the team moved to Kansas City in 1955 and became the Kansas City Athletics. It was not until 1968 that the team moved to Oakland.

The Athletics’ name originated in the term “Athletic Club” for local gentlemen’s clubs-dates to 1860 when an amateur team, the Athletic (Club) of Philadelphia, was formed. (A famous image from that era, published in Harper’s Weekly in 1866, shows the Athletic players dressed in uniforms displaying the familiar blackletter “A” on the front). The team later turned professional through 1875, becoming a charter member of the National League in 1876, but were expelled from the N.L. after one season. A later version of the Athletics played in the American Association from 1882-1891.

The team name is typically pronounced “Ath-LET-ics”, but their longtime team owner/manager Connie Mack called them by the old-fashioned colloquial Irish pronunciation “Ath-uh-LET-ics”. Newspaper writers also often referred to the team as the Mackmen during their Philadelphia days, in honor of their patriarch.

Controlling your ranking flow for more profits.

June 28th, 2009 — 01:29 pm

In my last post I had a section regarding on page SEO and in particular some information on controlling how ranking is passed from a website. When I first started SEO I wonder why my affiliate program page was getting a ranking, then I found out about ranking flow.

The ranking or authority of a website is determined on such aspects as popularity of the website (amount of traffic), number of income links and their quality, number of pages and on page SEO factors. Before I carry on, when I talk about ranking I am not referring to google page ranking, I am referring to the general ranking of a website for all search engines.

As all search engines have their own algorithm’s for ranking websites and unfortunately they don’t share that with the general public, it is impossible to determine exactly how website ranking is worked out. The only thing that is known for certain is onpage SEO, incoming links and amount of pages of a website, play a big part in a websites ranking.

The ranking of a website is probably the most valuable asset to a site owner, it can mean the difference between making a fortune on the Internet or just making some pocket change. Why is it so important? Well the ranking determines where a website is displayed in the search engines, a better ranking equals better placement and in turn better placement equals more clicks.

Like I explained in the previous post, imagine a website main webpage is a bucket which is filled with ranking from SEO effects and there are holes at the bottom of the bucket were the ranking flows out. As ranking is such a valuable asset it’s wise to direct the ranking to were you want it to go by blocking off those holes were the rankings not needed. I am talking about such pages as contact us, terms and condition, disclaimer, category pages, terms of use and pages along those lines. As those kind of pages are designed to improve the customer experience they won’t need SEO on them, so why waste the precious ranking on them.

The two methods I am going to use to control the ranking flow on my website are the html statement ‘nofollow’ and robots.txt. Both of these methods are very simple but very powerful in helping search engines figure out how you want them to see your website and were to direct the ranking.

The ‘nofollow’ statement tells the search engine to ignore the link it is associated with and not to pass any ranking through it. It was first created to help tackle spam comments on blogs but was quickly taken up by website owners when it became common knowledge that it was significant in controlling the flow of ranking on a website.

robots.txt is used to control the spiders that visit a website. A large part of a website traffic comes from programs called spiders, these spiders are used by thousands of companies for many different reasons on the Internet. So if a website is just left open for spiders they can eat up the bandwidth, slow a site down, look at and log information which a site owner may not want to publish and at the very worse mess up a site completely. How does robots.txt help with ranking control? Well it can be used to block off areas of a website were site owners don’t want the spiders to go and by doing so stops the flow of ranking to those areas.

The two methods above are not difficult to implement and are a good way to control the flow of ranking on a website, yet so many website owners overlook this when designing their sites. Having the power to shift ranking around a website will enable a site owner to rank the pages of their choosing with a lot less work and hassle.

Understand Why You Must Monitor Your Cat

June 28th, 2009 — 01:00 pm

It is vital that you understand your kitty’s normal habits, activity level, usual drinking and eating habits and regular litter box or bathroom routine. Likewise remember that with specific kitty maladies a cat might not exhibit very many symptoms or she might only exhibit very mild symptoms of feline health problems.

Cat illnesses may be complex and can call for laboratory exams so it is safest left to the pros.

While I know you’ve heard this already, prevention probably is the best of medicines. Naturally it is not possible to preclude each of cat illnesses however you may at least help dilute the chances of it.

Too many casual cat owners do not seriously reckon the nutrition of their cherished small cat. They presume they may just buy what is on the shelf of their local grocery store and just live with it.

This isn’t always the case. To fortify your feline’s immune system you must consider ingredients cautiously and attempt to furnish your kitty a species-appropriate, healthy diet with few fillers and by-products. Of course, you should be certain he or she always has access to clean water. Do not be cheap; purchasing your felline a high quality kitty food (I suggest a good percentage of his or her diet be moist food) can save you money and save you and your feline much difficulty and misery down the road.

Another manner to cut the risk of cat illness is by keeping your kitty inside. Inside kitties are much less likely to catch a cat health problem because they are not as exposed to carriers of feline diseases or parasites.

And of course… never skimp on your routine visits to the vet.

iPod and MP3 Music Player Accessories

June 27th, 2009 — 04:21 pm

Today it seems that most people spend hours commuting to school or work each week. They find themselves with a commute which they cannot change. Although they have to travel each day, that doesn’t mean they can’t get more from traveling or at least enjoy the boring commute. A solution might lie in the fact that more and more people today own an Apple iPod mp3 player.

Of course most everyone bought the iPod to play their favorite tunes but there are many other uses of this little miracle. College students can record their class lectures and transform them to mp3 format and play them back via their iPod mp3 player. Today, there are thousands of books are available on cd in mp3 format also. It is so easy to download music as single songs and full albums for your mp3 players also. You’ll be amazed at the huge variety of ipod mp3 player accessories available.

As most cars today have better then average sounding audio systems, most drivers would love to be able to play your recorded lectures or personal music list through your car sound system. A few years back you could spend hours on end searching specialty stores looking for the right ipod car adapter for your car or truck, but those days are over. I’ve found a website which offers great ipod adapter information as well as the largest variety of iPod mp3 music adapters and accessories.

Locating the correct mp3 music player adapter is quite easy. If you have an after market receiver like Kenwood or Eclipse, just select the correct brand ipod adapter. Of course if you have the OEM source unit, just find an adapter made for your specific vehicle be it Chevy, Acura, Toyota or whatever. This is fast and easy when you have access to a sufficient supply of brands. You specific vehicle adapters made by USA Spec, Soundgate and many other manufactures to apply to just about any brand of car or truck.

With a new ipod adapter, you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite music, audiobooks, lectures, podcasts and more right through your car’s sound system. Your commute will immediately seem much shorter.

Roots, Rock ‘n Blues - American Roots Music

June 27th, 2009 — 02:30 pm

I fell in love with American roots music while I was in college in the late 1960s. The irony of that is that I was born and grew up in the Washington, DC area and had to move to Minnesota to hear the blues for the first time!

I should say that it was in college that I first heard the blues played by the original artists. I’d been a big fan of the Rolling Stones and numerous other British Invasion groups who were all playing their versions of the blues, or derivatives thereof. I just had no idea at the time that they’d been so heavily influenced by a whole generation of musicians that I’d never heard of.

In the meantime, there were American musicians playing blues and blues-influenced rock to small, but devoted audiences. Three of my favorites (discovered for the most part years later) were Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins and Roy Buchanan. Lonnie Mack is best known for his radio hits, but is a killer blues player as I discovered much to my surprise when Alligator Records put out a video of a concert with Lonnie, Albert and Roy at Carnegie Hall in New York City from the early 1990s. The concert was called “Further On Down The Road” and was a real eye-opener for me when I first saw it. It’s still one of my favorite videos.

With the explosion of videos on the Internet, there is a wealth of blues video footage from the 1950s through today. It’s a blessing that so much still survives from the early days. Watching some of these legends perform helps make it clear just why they are legendary.

The Bad Advice Of Other Smokers

June 27th, 2009 — 01:29 pm

Do you trust an addict? Have you ever had a friend who was addicted to one of life’s most troubling addictions, heroin or cocaine? Even if you haven’t, then I’m sure that you will have heard stories about how you should never trust a junkie or else be prepared to have things stolen from you.

Now, of course, smokers are not that desperate as we have already discussed. Cigarettes are just affordable and also widely available. But many smokers are fooled by their addiction and will give bad advice or show strange behaviour to fellow smokers, especially those who want to stop.

When you stop smoking (that’s “when”, not “if”!) after reading this book, and you tell your smoker friends that you have stopped, I guarantee you that at least one of them will offer you a cigarette.

They will offer you a cigarette and then jokingly pretend that they had forgotten that you had stopped smoking. This happened to myself several times after stopping and it will happen to you as well! It has nothing to do with people forgetting that you had stopped smoking (how could they forget such a major event) and everything to do with addiction affecting behaviour. When your friends offer you cigarettes, their addictive-bent emotions are telling them that they have lost a fellow “addict friend” and they want you to rejoin the club.

This is all on a subconscious level. Maybe you don’t believe me but, as I said, I guarantee that this will happen to you at least once.

Do not trust the quitting smoking advice of a smoker. Would you trust a skiing coach who could not even ski himself? Then why would you trust a smoker to advise you on the best way to quit? You can only trust someone who has stopped smoking to advise you on how to quit your addiction.

On the other hand, would you trust a former addict? Would you trust someone who used to be an addict but found a way out and looks like never going back to those dark days?

You have a choice - trust the addict and remain an addict for life or trust me and your addiction will become a thing of the past.

Do You Want to Make Your Horse Happy This Winter?

June 26th, 2009 — 10:41 pm

Some people won’t believe me when I say this but what makes a horse happy in the winter is to be outdoors. Horses were created to have the freedom of outdoors even in the winter. Their coats will grow thicker and their bodies were made to live in colder temperatures. They are quite content with 15F temperatures.

The bonuses of winter turnout are exercise, fresh air, activity instead of boredom and as a result no winter weight gain. Your horse will be so much happier and healthier.

There is a little more work involved on your part but the results will be worth it.

If you don’t already have a shelter in your pasture it would be a good idea to construct one. A shelter is important on cold windy days. Something like a large bus shelter - a roof with 3 sides is the best because it covers every angle the wind can come in except the front.
Make sure that water is always available. When the temperatures dip down ice can form on the water troughs. If this is an ongoing problem where you live then an investment in a water heater or an automatic pasture waterer will do the trick. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how much they drink, since although they require water, their thirst drops off in the winter.

It’s essential to remember that horses will require more food during the winter months. This is because it requires more energy to stay warm. Increase the amount of hay. Increase it even more when the temperatures drop further. Since it takes longer to break down, hay endures longer which in turn provides more long term heat.

Supplements are also a high priority in the cold season. A very effective supplement is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Formula. It supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity as well as promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. The cold winter air tends to dry out hair and skin but the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Formula combats this. Check your blankets and see if they will be adequate. Avoid putting on blankets at the beginning of the season so that they can produce a thicker coat. This will protect them later on when the temperatures starts to drop. Tahitian Noni International makes this product and it is called TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials everywhere but in Australia

These are just a few ideas for a safe winter turnout. Your horse is worth it.
